About Today Readings

Tobit 3:1-11, 16-17. To you, O Lord, I lift my soul – Psalm 24(25):2-9. Mark 12:18-27.

Light after darkness

One wonders whether the Sadducees were thinking of the Book of Tobit when they approached the Lord with their question about marriage and resurrection. The first reading today briefly describes the sadness of Sarah who had married seven times but the demon had killed each of the seven husbands the night of the wedding. Her eighth husband is Tobias the son of the blind Tobit who is led to Sarah by the archangel Raphael. It becomes a happy marriage and founded on the heartfelt prayers of both Tobias and Sarah. The souls of Tobias and Sarah are expressed in their prayers and in the joy they find in each other’s company. And Raphael gives light to Tobit’s soul when his blindness is healed and Tobit looks on his son and new daughter-in-law. Imagine his prayer of thanks to God for the graces he received after such darkness.
