About Today Readings

1 Corinthians 7:25-31. Listen to me, daughter; see and bend your ear – Psalm 44(45):11-12, 14-17. Luke 6:20-26.

Jesus calls us to love others

I sometimes wonder how the people listening to The Beatitudes felt. I am sure that there were some who were uplifted. But I am equally sure that there were some who responded as we do when a politician talks about the ‘resilience of the poor’. It can be seen as an excuse for doing nothing. So, what makes the Beatitudes different to platitudes? For me, it is the fact that Jesus does not leave it there. Yes, he says that these people are blessed, but then he calls for action. He calls for change in those who treat them this way. ‘These people are special, treat them with respect and love. Do not let this state of affairs continue’. This call is to us just as much as it was to the people of Jesus’ time.
