The Body of Christ
The actions of Peter and John in today’s first reading are a visceral reminder of what the Church is – The Body of Christ. Called to be as Jesus Christ’s hands and feet. The disciples heal, not through their own power but, as Peter says, ‘in the name of Jesus of Nazareth’. Peter speaks in Jesus’s name and then extends a hand in imitation of him. These early disciples have nothing but the name of Jesus to invoke and his life to imitate.
To invoke Jesus’ name, to be as his hands and his feet, requires us to come to know him. On the road to Emmaus, and at table in the evening, Jesus shows how we might come to know him. He breaks open the Scripture for Cleopas and his companion, and Jesus blesses and breaks the bread for them too. He continues to reveal himself in word and sacrament.
