The Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Responding to God’s call
Today we celebrate the joy of God’s gift to humanity in Mary. Mary, the young girl of no status from Nazareth, is singled out, called, chosen, and gifted with the Holy Spirit. She is surprised by the forceful entry of God into her life and fearful of what this might mean asking, ‘how can this be?’. We often feel more connected to Mary in this moment, hearing her struggling with her fears and doubts. Questioning and contemplative she ponders the invitation in her heart, ultimately responding with her ‘yes’ to God’s call. What openness, what trust. Mary inspires a particular style of being on mission – contemplation and action. There is hope that among the doubt and questions of worthiness that we too can say our ‘yes’ and be active in our mission. Through listening, patient waiting and responsiveness to God’s call.
