Daniel 3:14-20, 24-25, 28. Glory and praise for ever! – Daniel 3:52-56. John 8:31-42.
Blessed are you, O Lord
‘Continue in my word and the truth of that word will set you free.’ Jesus is speaking here to those whom John calls unbelieving Jews. They call themselves descendants of Abraham and have never been slaves to anyone. Their sense of history is limited. They forgot they were once slaves to Pharoah. They forgot the Babylonian captivity. They forgot the prophet Daniel’s stories of the fiery furnace. How often do we forget history? They did not know their true father, God, as Jesus knew that God. At the end of John 8 Jesus says, ‘Before Abraham ever was, I am’. And they pick up stones to throw at him. They did not have bullets and bombs at that time. But the passion is near. As Azariah prayed in the burning furnace, ‘Blessed are you, O Lord, God of our ancestors, and worthy of praise; and glorious is your name forever!’
