Pray with intention in the heart

In the Gospel reading today we witness one of the most profound episodes in Jesus’ ministry, when he is asked to teach the disciples to pray. He teaches them The Lord’s Prayer, the prayer which has become, with the Hail Mary, the prayer of global connection to the Catholic faith tradition. Whenever and wherever we recite these prayers we share a common spiritual inheritance with the 1.2 billion other Catholics across the globe. They are our password prayers, acknowledging our belief and our belonging. When we pray, whether individually or communally, we seek to find God in the dailiness of our lives. Most importantly, when we pray we must do so with intention in the heart before the articulation of the words. God knows what we need before we kneel. In prayer, we have the chance to tell him in our own way and we know that we are always heard.
