Season of the Spirit Resource to Promote Faith and Justice
By Pray Editor11 May 2018
Through late May to the end of July, Australia marks several important faith and justice events on the calendar.
In the month following Pentecost on 20 May, the Catholic Church will recall the coming of the Holy Spirit among Christ’s apostles. And from May to July, Australia will consider its relationships with the environment and refugees, and reconciliation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians, during a series of national awareness events.
Jesuit Communications hopes the Holy Spirit will come to life in Catholic schools and ministries across Australia during this time, with the help of a new prayer resource for Pentecost focusing on these events. It is titled ‘Season of the Spirit’.
It will provide weekly prayers for staff and students to consider how the coming of the Holy Spirit invites us to consider our relationships with God, each other and creation; contemplate how God is calling us to be his people in the world today and build our communities through a spirit of reconciliation.
Beginning with the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, each weekly prayer comprises a scripture reading and reflection, with videos to deepen our learning. The prayer resource is written by James O’Brien with reflections from Fr Andrew Hamilton SJ.
The six-week program covers several religious and secular events with a focus on:
Week 1: Pentecost (20 May)
Week 2: Reconciliation week (27 May—3 June)
Week 3: World Environment Day (5 June)
Week 4: Care for the homeless (10 June)
Week 5: Refugee Week (17—23 June)
Week 6: Feast of St Aloysius in the Jubilee Year (21 June) (please note: this will be for the week beginning 25 June)
There are two versions of the resource – for use with secondary-aged students in schools and parishes, and for use with school staff and adults in Catholic ministries.
Prayer -> Conversation -> Action
We encourage you to follow a pattern of prayer, conversation and action in using this resource.
Teachers can use the student reflections in homeroom on the first day of the week, or as part of a broader school assembly.
Staff prayers can be used as reflections in morning meetings on the first day of the week or emailed out for personal prayer.
Each prayer offers a conversation point for us to reflect with someone nearby on the question ‘What small thing can I do this week?’
