The Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary
1 Maccabees 4:36-37, 52-59. We praise your glorious name, O mighty God – 1 Chronicles 29:10-12. Luke 19:45-48.
My house shall be a house of prayer
It is interesting to contrast the Catholic way of giving at Mass to churches which emphasise tithing. As the collection takes place, I sometimes wonder how the parish pays its bills. However, it does. In response to special appeals, parishioners are amazingly generous.
The parish I attend is known for its pastoral approach and emphasis on prayer. In the city, with traffic roaring past and throngs of people going about their day, it is an oasis of peace, with exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and Reconciliation offered. Workers attend weekday Mass regularly. Crowds come on Holy Days. People walk in and just sit in silence before returning to their work.
The Marist Fathers, who have served at St Patrick’s since 1868, will leave the parish on 31 December 2025. It is to be hoped that the Archdiocese of Sydney will ensure that this treasured place continues to be a spiritual and pastoral oasis.
