About Today Readings

St Martin of Tours

Wisdom 2:23 – 3:9. I will bless the Lord at all times – Ps 33(34):2-3, 16-19. Luke 17:7-10.

Live with God in love

The context of today’s reading from Wisdom matters. The author has just provided a lengthy rumination from the point of view of the godless, who ‘do not know the mysteries of God’; they think that ‘by chance we were born (and) when life is over, it will be as if we never existed’. This bleak view is common in Australia. Thirty-nine per cent of the population profess no belief in God. It helps us understand the societal breakdown, the despairing loneliness and possibly the suicide rate we see. But then the author’s vision shines through with Divine light: ‘God created humanity to be immortal . . . the souls of the just are in the hands of the Lord . . . After slight affliction will come great blessings . . . they will shine!’ And there is another promise included by the author, perhaps the most exciting of all: ‘Those who trust in him will penetrate the truth (and) live with him in love.’ Wow!
