Waters of life
Australians are well aware of the importance of water. With some parts of the country always under threat of water rationing and others drowning under torrential storms, every inhabitant is aware of water’s destructive and constructive properties.
Today’s psalm, ‘My body pines for you like a dry, weary land without water’ conjures a vivid and altogether too familiar image of a dry, cracked land.
I see Mary of Magdala, heart-sore and with red-rimmed eyes, thinking perhaps there are no tears left when she is confronted by an empty tomb. And once again she weeps for what she believes is another indignity perpetuated against her friend and teacher – that his body has been taken away.
What joy then to realise that Jesus is there, again with her and the apostles. It would have been like gentle rains on flowerbeds. Joy has come again; all will be well.
